When Should Your Baby’s First Tooth Come In?

Many parents wait with anticipation to finally see their baby’s first tooth poking through the gums.  A baby getting his or her very first tooth can be an exciting and sometimes tiring experience for both baby and parents.

When does the average baby get their first tooth?

When Does a Baby’s First Tooth Erupt?

The average baby’s first tooth comes into their mouth right around the age of 6 months. The first tooth is usually a lower front tooth.

What If My Baby Doesn’t Have Any Teeth at 6 Months?

Some parents may wonder if something is developmentally wrong with their child if they haven’t gotten their first tooth by the time they’ve reached six months of age.

Keep in mind that six months is just an average.  Some babies are born with teeth already in their mouth.  These are known as natal teeth.

Many babies don’t get their first tooth until they are almost one year old.  My son didn’t get his first tooth until he was about 10 months old.  Today, he’s a bright, intelligent little boy!

Conclusion – Just Relax!

In conclusion, if you’re baby’s first tooth hasn’t come in by the age of six months, rest assured that your baby is most likely normal.  The average age that a baby’s tooth comes in is six months.  Many baby’s get their first tooth after this, and some get them before.  If you do have concerns, you can always call your family dentist to see if an appointment should be made.

  1. My daughter is almost six months old, and today I am positive I saw a little white tooth poking out of her upper from gum. When I went back to look at it it was no longer there. did I do something to it when I went to touch it a few minutes earlier? Or did I see something else. I am worried!

    • Hi Michelle – If you touch your baby’s gums, they can change to a lighter color since the pressure of your finger pushes some of the blood out of the way. If it’s not there any more, I wouldn’t worry too much. I’m sure she’ll be getting her tooth any time now! Keep us updated on what happens.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for your comment!

  2. hi, my name is yssai… my daughter is 9 months now but she doesn’t have teeth. Something wrong, or what should i do.

    • Hi Yssai – I’ve heard of kids getting their first tooth shortly after their first birthday, I wouldn’t be worried about it yet – they’re probably just coming in a little behind schedule.

  3. Great info! Our first daughter didn’t get her first tooth until 12 1/2 months old. Now she’s 6 1/2 and hasn’t lost one. But, there’s absolutely nothing “wrong” with her development. And, if you’re breastfeeding, be thankful if the teeth come a little late. We now have a six month old and I hope hers hold off too 🙂

  4. Our son is 6 months old and absolutely miserable right now from teething. He has all the top symptoms plus a few more. Is there anything we can do to help relieve some pain? (We have tried teethers, orajel, tablets, infant Tylenol) And we can see large bumped areas on the bottom, but does this mean we are getting close?

  5. Hi,
My 8mth old has 4 teeth now and her 2 front teeth have just started to cut through one more than the other. She fall and chipped her front tooth on a toy today, i feel so upset this has happened, especially on her front tooth and it isn’t even 100% out of the gum as yet.
Is there anything that i can do?

  6. Our baby is almost 15 months old and still not one tooth! Going to a pediatric dentist to get x-rays per my dentist’s advice. Nervous…

  7. my sons bottom gums look like he will be cutting in pretty soon. he will be 6 months on sunday. does it mean hi will cut his first tooth pretty soon?

  8. My bubs is just 16 weeks and his bottom two teeth have popped up overnight. I have been saying for a month or so that he is teething and everyone told me i was crazy but yep mothers intuition!!

  9. Hi my son is 3 months as of Feb. 21st, and has been showing signs of teething since 2.5 months. Drooling irritability, gumming hands and fingers, swollen lower gums on the left side, trouble sleeping. I am sure we will see a tooth there in a few weeks.
